Hannibal Regional announces new program to improve lung cancer detection

HANNIBAL, Mo. — Hannibal Regional recently announced a collaboration with Illuminate AI to launch the Illuminate program, aimed at improving lung cancer detection and management.

The American Cancer Society says lung cancer accounts for about 13 percent of all new cancer cases in the state and is the leading cause of cancer deaths. An estimated 5,550 new cases of lung cancer were diagnosed in 2021 in Missouri, with approximately 3,340 deaths attributed to the disease.

The Illuminate program at Hannibal Regional utilizes cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology to analyze radiology reports, identifying lung nodules that may require further evaluation. By applying widely accepted guidelines for managing pulmonary nodules, the AI system prioritizes cases needing immediate attention.

In a press release, Dr. Jennifer Minoff, a pulmonary/critical care physician at Hannibal Regional, said, “Illuminate represents a leap forward in our ability to detect and address potential lung cancers early. This will help us more efficiently identify at-risk patients and streamline their care.”

The Illuminate program offers a comprehensive approach to patient care, with real-time reviews of radiologist reports, reducing the risk of overlooking potential warning signs. Additionally, nurse navigators proactively engage with patients identified by the system, ensuring timely follow-up care.

The program’s primary goals are to increase lung cancer screening rates and improve early detection. Early detection is vital. The five-year survival rate for localized lung cancer is 61%, compared to only 6% for distant-stage cancer.

Hannibal Regional plans to expand the use of this technology to identify other conditions such as aneurysms, cysts and various types of nodules, further enhancing its diagnostic capabilities across multiple areas of care.
