DAILY DIRT: Why do British people never sound British when they sing … and other things that drive us crazy
Daily Dirt for Friday, Dec. 13, 2024
Did anyone else realize today is a Friday the 13th? … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 1,140 of The Daily Dirt.
1. Some things to ponder as we head toward the weekend:
- Why do British people never sound British when they sing? This has bothered me since the early 1960s when I heard the Beatles sing — and then talk.
- In a movie theater, which arm rest is yours?
- Who do “fat chance” and “slim chance” mean the same thing?
- Why is someone “in” a movie, but “on” TV?
- What was the best thing BEFORE sliced bread?
- What is the difference between “partly cloudy” and “partly sunny”?
- If French people swear, do they say, “Pardon my English?”
- Why, in baseball, is the foul pole called just that when if a ball hits it the ball is fair.
- Why is a building “razed” when it is torn down.
- Why do you say you are walking in bare feet when you are actually walking ON bare feet?
- What happens if you get scared “half to death” — twice?
- Why is the number 11 not pronounced “onety-one”?
2. Did you know (Part 215)
- That hippopotamus milk is pink.
- That Sonic is offering two new drinks in honor of Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton: The Nicole is a “Dirty Strawberry” Dr. Pepper, the Paris is a Dragonfruit Sprite with Nerds candy.
- That Burger King is bringing back a number of fan favorites starting Dec. 19: Bacon Melt, Mushroom-n-Swiss Melt and Classic Melt, plus Fiery Chicken Fries and Churro Fries.
- That Firehouse Subs will have a new French Dip Sub that includes Swiss and Provolone cheeses, among other things.
- That there will be SEVEN new Oreos products in January, including Golden Cakesters, Peanut Butter minis, Irish Creme thins and Oreo Puffs cereal.
3. This week’s celebrity birthdays include:
- Entertainer Taylor Swift turns 35 today.
- Rocker Ted Nugent will blow out 75 candles today.
- Danville, Ill. native, actor, singer, comedian and former TV star Dick Van Dyke is 99, also today.
- Singer and musician Dave Clark, former leader of the Dave Clark Five, turns 82 on Sunday.
- Actor Brad Pitt will be 60 on Wednesday.
