But don’t worry, there are still plenty to choose from … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 1,181 of The Daily Dirt.

1. It’s one of the most wonderful times of the year. Girl Scout cookie sales are now going on in most areas of the country through April. Several years ago, I bought 96 boxes from various Girl Scouts in Quincy. It took me about three months to eat them all, but the challenge was worth it.

There is some sad news, however, involving Girl Scout cookies. This will be the final year for S’mores and Toast-Yay cookies. No particular reason was given.

S’mores features what has become a classic graham cracker, marshmallow and chocolate flavor and were introduced in 2017. They’ll be sorely missed.

The Toast-Yay model arrived in 2021 wand were meant to taste like French toast dipped in icing. They are shaped like a mini piece of toast. They’ll be missed, too — but there are still 10 to 12 options remaining, depending on what area you live.

While we’re on the subject, here are my all-time five favorite kinds of Girl Scout cookies. I could (easily) eat an entire box of any of the following at one sitting.

  • 1. Peanut Butter Sandwich: Those crisp and crunchy oatmeal cookies with creamy peanut butter filling are the perfect snack. The peanut butter flavor is exquisite.
  • 2. Caramel deLites:Vanilla cookies topped with caramel, sprinkled with toasted coconut, and laced with chocolaty stripes. Oh my.
  • 3. Peanut Butter Patties: Crispy vanilla cookies layered with peanut butter and covered with a chocolaty coating. Another quality effort that highlights the taste of peanut butter.
  • 4. Lemonades: Savory slices of shortbread with a refreshingly tangy lemon-flavored icing. (For when I’m not in the mood for peanut butter.)
  • 5. Shortbread: It’s just a shortbread cookie. Period. No icing, no frills. Sometimes that’s all you need.

Most overrated: Thin Mints. Those crispy chocolate wafers dipped in a mint chocolaty coating have never excited my taste buds. Sorry.

2. Did you know (Part 253) …

  • Toilets are not permitted to be flushed in Switzerland after 10 p.m. (I know, I know. The possible comments here are endless.)
  • Ants do not have lungs.
  • The flu has to get Chuck Norris shots every year.
  • The much-maligned shooting talent (or lack thereof) of WNBA player Angel Reese was best exemplified in a game against the Phoenix Mercury that saw her shoot eight air balls. E-I-G-H-T.
  • A single cup of coffee can contain more caffeine than three cans of cola.

3. 1971 may very well be one of the most underrated years ever when it comes to pop music. The following classics were all among the top 20 songs that year:

  • “Joy to the World,” by Three Dog Night.
  • “Maggie May,” by Rod Stewart.
  • “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” by the Bee Gees.
  • “It’s Too Late,” by Carole King.
  • “Me and Bobby McGee,” by Janis Joplin.
  • “Knock Three Times,” by Dawn.
  • “Superstar,” by the Carpenters.
  • “Just My Imagination,” by the Temptations.
  • “Beginnings/Color My World,” by Chicago.
  • “Theme from ‘Shaft,'” by Isaac Hayes.

Steve Thought O’ The Day
Did you know a select few individuals, like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, have a special McDonald’s VIP Gold Card that entitles them to free food for life. Wouldn’t those be better suited for the poor?

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. When you read that Steve bought 96 boxes from various Girl Scouts in Quincy a few years ago and it took him about three months to eat them all, did you think “96 boxes in three months? I would get sick”? Or did you think, “Sounds like Steve.”
