QPD and Adams County Sheriff warn of phone scam impersonating officers

QUINCY — Local law enforcement is warning the public about a phone scam that is calling for people to pay fines they don’t have.

Both the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and Quincy Police Department sent out news releases Tuesday warning the public that scammers are offering to take payments over the phone for the fines by using Venmo, Bitcoin or PayPal and even asking for bank account information.

They are claiming to be law enforcement, even being so brazen as to impersonate specific officers. The phone number is being spoofed and appears to be coming from QPD (217-228-4470) or the ASCO (217-277-2200).

Both agencies say they will never call someone seeking information over the phone and they will contact you in person if they have to discuss such a matter with you.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up and call the numbers directly to inform the officers you’ve contacted by a scammer.
