Jerry L. “Joe” Schieferdecker, age 76, of Quincy and formerly of Payson, died on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at 3:38 a.m. in Blessing Hospital.

Joe was born on October 16, 1948 in Quincy, a son of Kenneth L. and Emma F. Tyler Schieferdecker. On July 8, 1967 Joe married Doris Reckers at Grace Methodist Church in Quincy. She survives.

Joe was a 1966 graduate of Central High School in Camp Point, IL

Joe was a skilled and hardworking carpenter who spent the majority of his life in the construction industry. Having started his career as a mason, he found his true calling as a carpenter, where he dedicated many years to his craft. Most recently, he served as a union organizer for the Mid-Central Illinois Regional Council of Carpenters and was a member of Carpenters Union Local 270 in Springfield, IL, working to support and advocate for fellow tradesmen.

Outside of work, Joe loved spending time with family and friends, playing cards, particularly Euchre, Pinochle, and poker. He was also a loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs and rarely missed a televised game. Joe also had a passion for woodworking, and he enjoyed fishing.

Joe was a longtime member of Payson United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two children: Tim (Jennifer Winking) Schieferdecker of Quincy and Kelly (Aaron) Beckman of Quincy; two grandchildren: Wade (Suzi) Schieferdecker of Troy, IL and Jack Schieferdecker of Eldridge, IA; a brother, Terry Schieferdecker of Quincy; two sisters-in-law: Jackie Schieferdecker of Payson, IL and Marcia Schieferdecker of Ursa, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Gary and Larry Schieferdecker; his parents-in-law, Milton C. and Darlene Rhea Reckers; a brother-in-law, Dale Reckers; and a sister-in-law, Diann Schieferdecker.

Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2025 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.

Service: 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with Rev. Annelle Ruemmler officiating.

Burial: Evergreen Cemetery, Camp Point, IL
