DAILY DIRT: What color of Gatorade will douse today’s winning Super Bowl coach?

The post-victory Gatorade bath has become as much of a Super Bowl tradition as the game itself … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 1,197 of The Daily Dirt.

1. One of the most popular Super Bowl events to capture a football nation’s interest is the iconic Gatorade bath the winning coach receives.

Today will be no different when the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles meet in Super Bowl LIX (that’s 59 for the Roman Numerally challenged).”Ever since sports gambling started to become legal across the United States back in 2018, the Super Bowl has become one of the most popular events to bet on,” writes Zachary Neel of athlonsports.com. “One of the most popular things fans wager on every year has very little to do with the game. Instead, it’s all about what color of Gatorade shower the winning coach will take after the final whistle blows.

“It is tradition for players on the winning team to douse their coach with a cooler full of Gatorade after the game is in hand, and fans have bought in to this, betting on which color the shower will be.”

So what will today’s color of Gatorade be? Common sense might suggest red or green, since those are the two principal colors of the combatants. Past history, however, might suggest otherwise.

Here are the last 10 Gatorade colors the Super Bowl winners have used:

  • Super Bowl 58: Purple (Chiefs Win)
  • Super Bowl 57: Purple (Chiefs Win)
  • Super Bowl 56: Blue (Rams Win)
  • Super Bowl 55: Blue (Buccaneers Win)
  • Super Bowl 54: Orange (Chiefs Win)
  • Super Bowl 53: Blue (Patriots Win)
  • Super Bowl 52: Yellow (Eagles Win)
  • Super Bowl 51: None (Patriots Win)
  • Super Bowl 50: Orange (Broncos Win)
  • Super Bowl 49: Blue (Patriots Win)

Here’s a look at the current odds for Gatorade color, according to FanDuel Sportsbook:

Lime Green/Yellow: -195
Purple: +370
Orange: +950
Red/Pink: +1500
Blue: +1500
Clear/Water: +1500

Personally, I’m going with purple, because I think the Chiefs will win — again.

3. Arguably the best story connected to a Super Bowl dates to the very first, back in 1967.

Max McGee was a backup wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers and didn’t expect to get much action in the game. So of course, he stayed out all Saturday night and took in the Los Angeles social scene.

Boyd Dowler, ahead of McGee on the team’s depth chart, was hurt on the game’s second play. Big trouble for a guy with a hangover, right?

Wrong.

McGee caught seven passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns to help lead the Packers to a 35-10 victory.

Steve Thought O’ The Day – My Super Bowl prediction: Kansas City 31, Philadelphia 24. MVP: Patrick Mahomes (again).

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. He will eat 59 wings today in honor of Super Bowl LIX.
