HANNIBAL, Mo. — The City of Hannibal recently welcomed two new employees to the staff at City Hall.

Mark Kempker was hired as assistant building inspector. His job is to ensure that buildings are safe and meet building codes, which includes inspecting new and existing structures and issuing violation notices. The building inspector’s office reviews plans, issues appropriate permits when necessary, enforces all applicable building codes within city limits and ensures completion of all such improvements in accordance with ordinances.

Kempker, a lifelong Hannibal resident, recently retired after almost 21 years of service with the Hannibal Fire Department. He has served as training officer, fire investigator and public information officer. He is certified as a fire inspector and investigator with the International Fire Services Accreditation Congress.

“I look forward to working alongside the construction professionals and citizens to ensure safety and compliance in the city’s buildings and infrastructure,” Kempker said in a press release.

Rhonda Stevenson has joined the staffs of Hannibal Parks and Recreation, Street Department and Department of Public Works as DPW management assistant. She will also serve as secretary for the Planning and Zoning Commission, Building Commission, Board of Adjustment and Historic District Development Commission.

A lifelong Hannibal resident, Stevenson has previously worked at Hannibal Carbide Tool, MoDot, Swiss Colony and Golden Eagle Distributing. She has done extensive volunteer work for the Hannibal Jaycees and Elks Lodge 1198.

“I enjoy volunteering and giving back to our community as much as possible,” Stevenson said. “I am looking forward to working for the city. I love our city and am hoping that anything I can do as an employee will just help the city get better and better.”
