QUINCY — Karol Ehmen is Mayor Mike Troup and the Adams County Republican Central Committee’s choice to replace Mike Farha as one of the city’s two 4th Ward alderman.

Ehmen’s appointment will go through at Monday’s Quincy City Council meeting and she will be immediately sworn in and seated to participate in the meeting.

“I’ve thought about this for a long time,” she said. “I think my background has prepared me well for being part of the decisions being made so Quincy can continue to be a vibrant community that honors our history. That we can provide a high quality of life for all of our citizens and continue to secure economic opportunity for future generations.”

Ehmen, who was the director of the Historic Quincy Business District (now known simply as “The District”) from 1997 to 2008, now works as the Events & Special Projects Manager for Phibro Animal Health Corporation.

Ehmen said she was approached to fill the vacancy by County GOP Chairman Jon McCoy and planned to run to be elected to the seat in 2027. Tony Sassen was just re-elected for another term in the other 4th Ward seat on Tuesday.

“It’s been a quick process,” Ehmen said regarding her appointment. “It’s been very supportive and welcoming.”

Following Ehmen’s appointment and the swearing in of Laura McReynolds in the 5th Ward, three of the council’s 14 members will be women, including Kelly Mays in the 3rd Ward. And they are all Republican.

McCoy called that “significant.”

“It’s a great thing to have great representation that reflects our community, but the most important thing is that the mayor and the chairman think I can do the job,” Ehmen said.

Ehmen is familiar with the city’s budgeting process as she had to make those presentations to the city when she was the head of The District. Now, she will be on the other end as she will jump right into budget hearings as the city prepares its Fiscal 2026 spending plan for approval by the end of April.

“I’m very familiar with the (budgeting) process,” she said. “It’s not fun, but it is necessary and important.”

Farha resigned from the City Council in early March after nearly 26 years on the governing body due to health reasons.
