Chicago area man sentenced to 60 years for 2022 shooting death in Macomb

MACOMB, Ill. — Circuit Judge Heidi Benson sentenced Dylan Lovato of Beach Park to 60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the murder of Ivan Almanza on March 9, 2022. The sentencing hearing was held Friday morning at the McDonough County Courthouse in Macomb.
The sentence must be served at 100 percent, pursuant to Illinois law. Four victim impact statements were read by members of Almanza’s family. Lovato gave a statement in allocution, admitting for the first time that he shot and killed Almanza.
Lovato, now 26, traveled four hours from his family’s home in the Chicago area to Macomb on March 9, 2022, and went to his ex-girlfriend’s apartment across the street from the Western Illinois University campus. After gaining entry to her apartment, Lovato shot and killed Almanza, 23, who was sleeping, at point blank range using two different guns. Lovato fled but was pulled over and arrested in Galesburg soon. He was found guilty by a McDonough County jury on Aug. 1, 2024, after a four-day jury trial.
