QUINCY — People in Quincy will join people in more than 340 cities nationwide to honor the legacy of past labor struggles during a May Day Strong event from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at 3236 Broadway organized by 50501 Quincy Illinois. To RSVP, visit https://mobilize.us/s/7kQ5Q3.

Participants at the event say they will be calling for:

  • “An end to the billionaire takeover and corruption under the Trump administration”
  • Full funding for public schools, healthcare, and housing for all
  • Protection and expansion of Medicaid, Social Security and critical social programs
  • An immediate halt to attacks on immigrants, Black, indigenous, trans and other “targeted” communities
  • Union protections, fair wages and dignity for all workers
  • An end to U.S.-backed military actions and weapons in all foreign nations.

Allison Huber, grassroots community organizer of 50501 Quincy Illinois, said in a press release, “There is nothing fair about a few people being permitted to hoard billions, sometimes hundreds of billions, of dollars in personal wealth while the majority of our population struggles to buy groceries. We need education. We need healthcare. We need due process. We need to stop sending humans to concentration camps and detaining innocent people, children even, in for-profit prisons in our country. We need bodily autonomy. We need peace and total ceasefire from all U.S. military involvements.

“It should be self-evident that every human deserves life, liberty and the means to be happy. These are not ‘terms or demands from some unreasonable, adversarial fringe group.’ These are our human rights, and this is our declaration that the treasure we seek is the society we intend to leave for the next generation.”
