Clyde M. Jenkins, Jr., 80, died Thursday, December 12, in Mercy Hospital in St. Louis after a series of debilitating illnesses. Mr. Jenkins was born December 29, 1943, in Quincy, the first child of Clyde M. Jenkins, Sr., and Carolyn Maxine Hibbard Jenkins. He attended Washington Elementary School, Quincy Junior High School and Quincy High School, where he was a member of the class of 1962. He was an outstanding student and a well-liked member of the class and was elected class president in his senior year.
Clyde was a talented athlete, who could do many things well. He especially loved softball, tennis, and racquetball. However, he never went out for sports at Quincy High, concentrating on academics, class leadership and working after school at Huelsmeyer’s Market on South 12th. Although from a modest family, his market job enabled him to buy a car, a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria, of which he was very proud. Later, he always had fun driving his Corvettes.
After high school Clyde went to the University of Cincinnati, where he began to develop a lifelong and intense passion for computers. After leaving the university, he joined a company in Louisville, where he met Lindsay-Anne McDonald, a registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). They were married in 1973. In Louisville, he joined Humana, where his computer talents caught the eye of senior executives, for whom he was soon preparing presentations. Humana also sponsored his work to obtain an MBA. In these early days in Louisville, Clyde developed an interest in flying, getting his pilot’s license and instrument rating and owning all or part of two airplanes. After leaving Humana he founded Jenkins Consulting, based in Louisville but working for companies in various cities. This became the basis for his work for the next 20 years. In 1984 he and Lindsay-Anne moved to Hawaii, where he based his consulting work concentrating on accounting software, and computer training at the University of Hawaii, the Air Force, and private companies in Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, Pohnpei, and Yap.
Clyde and Lindsay-Anne moved to the St. Louis area in 1996 and Clyde worked in various computing and data-processing jobs and writing computer certification test questions, while Lindsay-Anne retired from anesthesia and became a medical and facility coding instructor. His hobbies included beautiful stained-glass projects, many wonderful needle point pictures, and coloring. He had a great eye for color. He constructed many terrariums, beautiful hanging plant containers, flowerpots, and window panels for coworkers and friends.
Clyde is survived by Lindsay-Anne and a sister, Cindy Kenning (Steve) of Quincy and nephews Keith (Julie) Kenning, Troy Kenning and Brian Kenning and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol, and his parents. No funeral or memorial service is planned, just the memories of his friends.
