Darlene Elizabeth Herman, age 71, of Quincy, died on Monday, December 30, 2024 at 8:30 p.m. in her home, surrounded by family.

Darlene was born on September 3, 1953 in Hannibal, MO and placed in the loving arms of John and Eleanor Fout Spurrier. Darlene was married to James Bliven from 1970 to 1984. They had two children, Sherry in 1971 and Jennifer in 1974. Darlene married Gary Herman in 1991 in Rochester, NY. He survives.

Darlene was a 1971 graduate of Quincy High School, and she received her LPN certification from John Wood College. She worked as an LPN at Sunset Home in Quincy and at St. John’s Home in Rochester, NY. After retirement, she worked as a crossing guard for Quincy Junior High School and in the cafeterias at Berrian and Denman schools.

Music was a huge part of Darlene’s life. She played multiple instruments including, but not limited to, organ, guitar, accordion, and banjo. Darlene was an instructor at her family’s store, Spurrier’s Music. She also played in a number of bands throughout her life, including Predawn Hour and BBC Express. Darlene’s proudest accomplishment was playing accordion with her dad.

Darlene was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where she was an active volunteer. In her free time, Darlene was an avid fan of St. Louis Cardinals baseball. She also enjoyed taking trips to the casino. Most of all, Darlene loved the time that she spent at family gatherings.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters: Sherry (Shad) Richmiller of Liberty, IL and Jennifer (Mike) Peck of Clifton Springs, NY; seven grandchildren: Brittney (Steven) Miller of Durham, MO; Tyler Bliven of Quincy; Morgan Loos of Payson; Rachel Peck of Canadaigua, NY; Aleece Case of Palmyra, NY; Jared (fiancée, Skyler Young) Carlson of Clifton Springs, NY; and Danielle Peck of Clifton Springs, NY; six great-grandchildren: Jace Mixer of Barry, IL; Fletcher, Henry, and Lincoln Miller of Durham, MO; and Julien and Taytum Carlson of Clifton Springs, NY; three siblings: Katherine Dieker of Quincy; Marilyn Reille of Leavenworth, KS; and David (Darlene) Spurrier of Quincy; numerous nieces and nephews; and her fur babies: Smokey, Goldy, Yadi, Precious, and her favorite, Miss Kitty.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, James L. Mixer; and her fur babies: Shock, Little Bit, Ralph, Annie, Ashes, Jacob, and Molly.

Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 3, 2025 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.

Services: 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 6, 2025 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with Rev. Martin Eden officiating.

Entombment: A private family entombment will take place at Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Memorials: Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or Blessing Foundation for Hospice.
