Debbie Jean Hamm – O’Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home
Debbie Jean Hamm, 68, of Quincy, passed away at 10:22 am Monday, September 16, 2024, at her home in Quincy, IL.
Debbie was born January 12, 1956, in Quincy, IL to Donald “Dale” and Marcella Jean (Ballow) Rhea, where she grew up surrounded by the warmth of her family. On August 25, 1973, she married the love of her life, Raymond “Joe” Hamm, in Taylor, MO. Their union was blessed with four wonderful children and a lifetime of memories. Joe remains to honor her legacy, along with their four children, Jamie Hamm (Kimberly) of Hannibal, MO, Jeremy D. Hamm of Payson, IL, Michelle Hoing (Keith) of Ursa, IL, and Rosanne Hamm (Randy Stathem) of Quincy, IL.
Debbie’s life was further enriched by the laughter and love of her eight grandchildren, Allison Hamm, Jaydon Summy, Jordyn Hamm, Hayleigh Hamm, Hannah Hoing, Emma Hoing, Tiara Hoing, and Quinton Rohwer, and the sweet embrace of her two great-grandchildren, Elijah Crawford and Jaxon Crawford. Her sisters, Linda Collins (Terry), Pam Morris (Greg), and Kelly Ragar (Gary), also survive her, each carrying a piece of Debbie’s spirit in their hearts. Debbie was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; one brother, Donnie Rhea; and one grandson, Jacob Hamm.
A proud alumna of Palmyra High School, Class of 1974, Debbie’s work ethic and dedication to helping others were evident early on. Her career in healthcare spanned many years, with her compassionate nature shining through in her roles at Blessing Hospital. As a receptionist in the ER department and later as a clerical worker in Clinical Radiology, Debbie’s warmth and kindness were a comfort to patients and colleagues alike until her retirement in 2021.
Beyond her professional achievements, Debbie was a woman of many passions. She found solace in the beauty of her garden, tending to her flowers with a gentle hand and a nurturing spirit. Her artistic talents shone brightly through her stained glass creations, each piece a reflection of her vibrant soul. This passion blossomed into The Looking Glass, a shop in Hannibal where she shared her beautiful creations with the world. Debbie’s love for refurbishing furniture was more than a hobby; it was an expression of her creativity, as she breathed new life into forgotten treasures.
Debbie’s love for flipping houses was fueled by her admiration for Joanna Gaines and countless hours spent watching HGTV. Her backyard was her sanctuary, a place where she could immerse herself in nature’s beauty. Yet, it was her trips to Arkansas to visit her best friend that truly filled her with joy and rejuvenation.
Above all, Debbie was a matriarch whose heart belonged to her family. She was a constant presence at her grandchildren’s events, cheering them on with pride and offering unwavering support. Her love was the glue that held her family together, and her legacy of kindness, laughter, and love will continue to inspire them for generations to come.
The family will host a Celebration of Debbie’s life on Sunday, October 13, 2024, from 1-5pm at the Corinthian Event Center at 415 Hampshire Street in Quincy.
