Evelyn Kmiecik, 102, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on September 21st, 2024 in her home, with her daughter Susan and granddaughter Tiffany by her side.
Evelyn was born October 1st, 1921, in the beautiful village of Nettlebed, Oxfordshire, England. Daughter to Martha and Sidney Smith. She was the eldest daughter in the family, with five Siblings. She had one older brother who at 18 was drafted into the British Navy. His Ship was sunk in the 1st weeks of World War 2. Evelyn herself was also drafted in the ATS(British Women’s Army) and became an ambulance driver in the War. Evelyn has outlived all her siblings and their spouses and most of her close friends.
She married Fred Wilson in 1940 and from this union, 2 Children were born. Sidney and Susan Wilson. Later, she married Joseph Kmiecik, then moved to America to join her sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Jack Sharpe in Des Moines, Ia. She was an excellent cook and established seamstress. In her younger years, she played Tennis on the grass courts in Nettlebed, which later became her favorite past time of watching professional tennis and football on TV, along with reading, knitting and crocheting.
Evelyn was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Johnston, IA, and later was a member of the Lutheran church in Maquoketa, IA. She was a member of “The English Club” in Des Moines before her move to Maquoketa.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter Susan Baker of Maquoketa, IA. Son, Sidney(Janis) Wilson of Quincy, IL.
Grandchildren: Sidney (Kelly) Wilson of Indianola, IA. Tania Stinson of Adele, IA. Tiffany (John) Baker of Omaha, NE., Joseph (Yenely) Hanifen, East Dubuque, IL
Great grandchildren: Taylor(Abby) Stinson, Paul(Kurren) Stinson, Noah(Theresa) Baker, Tristen Welch, Angel Rheyes, Sidney Osbourne-Wilson
Great-Great Grandchild: Scarlet Stinson
Step-Grandchildren: Tasha(Chad)Albold of Fishers, IN. Lindsay(Ryan)Kelly, Springfield, IL., Trevor(Kristi)Beck of Loraine, IL.
Step-Great Grandchildren: Blake and Cade Albold, Lauryn, Lila and Levi Kelly, Reece and Layne Beck.
Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews both in England and America.
All her family and extended family and friends had a very special place in her heart, and she had a heart of GOLD.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe Kmiecik, her sisters and their spouses Brenda(Stan), Alice(Bill), Sheila(Joe), and Joyce(Jack) and her brother George.
There will be no visitation. A private visitation and graveside service for Immediate family only will be held.

Merle Hay Funeral Home in Des Moines, IA is handling arrangements. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Cemetery in Des, Moines, IA.
