Frances Nixon Bassett Clay was born January 16, 1936 in Quincy, IL, a daughter of William and Mary Buckman Nixon-Lewis. She married Wilbert Bassett. Following their divorce, she later married Granville Clay on January 21, 1967.

She attended Quincy Public Schools and Jackson Michigan Community College, obtaining an associate degree. She later became a certified physician orthopedic surgical assistant for 18 years in Jackson, Michigan. In 1996 she retired from Quincy, IL Veterans Home. She was a member of St. John Anglican Parish. She enjoyed volunteering and community service. She was a member of Adams County Republican Club.

Survivors include a grandson, Brandon Stanton of Monroe City, MO; a granddaughter, Nikki Gibson (Jason) of Lee Summit, MO; two sisters, Margaret Alexander of Moline, IL and Barbara Lewis in St. Charles, MO; and many nieces, nephews, and step-relatives.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Granville Clay; a son, Brian Bassett; a sister, Norma Mahr; a brother, William Nixon; and a sister in infancy, Willetta Nixon.

There will be no visitation per her wishes. Cremation rites have been accorded under the direction of O’Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home. Private inurnment will take place at Greenmount Cemetery in Quincy, IL at a later date.

In lieu of flowers or food, donations can be made to Frances’ extended family, the Quincy YMCA, St. John Anglican Parish, or the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be left at www.odonnellcookson.com.
