Garth Oitker – O’Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home
Garth Oitker, 79, of Liberty, passed away at 2:43 pm Sunday, May 19, 2024, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.
Garth was born November 29, 1944, in Quincy, IL to Robert Gail “Bob” and Mildred M. (Brown) Oitker. He was married to Ann Marie Klaas on April 30, 1966, in Quincy, IL. She preceded him in death on April 16, 1996.
Garth’s journey began in the heart of Illinois, where he grew up surrounded by the fields and farms that would shape his life’s work. He dedicated many years to farming, with a focus on cattle and hogs before transitioning to grain farming. His commitment to the land was paralleled only by his service to his country, as he proudly served in the United States National Guard, a period of his life he spoke of with great pride.
Garth’s life was filled with interests that showed his love for the outdoors and his rural roots. He was an enthusiastic coon hunter and horse rider, finding peace and excitement in these activities. He had a strong passion for livestock and often spent time with his cattle and hogs, ensuring they were well cared for. A lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, Garth loved attending games to cheer on his team. The farm was his favorite place, where he enjoyed working the land or simply relaxing in the countryside. Garth also liked visiting the lock and dam to watch the barges. Music brought him joy, especially the songs of Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn. He also had a special love for fast cars, particularly his 1956 Ford, which he spoke about with pride.
Above all, Garth cherished the time spent with his family. He is survived by his loving daughter, Marlyna A. Oitker (Derek Shawgo) of Ursa, IL; his adored granddaughter, Andelyn Oitker; his devoted fiancée, Angela L. Schmidt of Liberty, IL; his caring sister, Goldnita Schwartz (Bill) of Plainville, IL; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and greats who will miss his guidance and warmth. Garth’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and the bonds of family that he nurtured throughout his life.
Garth was preceded in death by his beloved wife, his dear parents, and his two sons, Daniel Lee Oitker and Stephen Robert Oitker. Their memory remained a guiding light in his life, and he carried their love with him always.
