Spidle-Hilda

Hilda Elizabeth Spidle, 80, of Quincy, passed away at 6:33 am Sunday, September 1, 2024, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

Born May 31, 1944, in Quincy, IL, Hilda was the daughter of William M. and Loney Belle (Jackson) Shaffer. She was one of nineteen children. She was married to Jack L. Spidle on September 4, 1964, in Quincy, IL. He preceded her in death on April 19, 2003.

Survivors include her daughter, Julie Lee Garrison and her husband Wayne; two grandchildren, Bret M. Garrison and Jaylie A. Garrison, all of LaHarpe, IL; two brothers, Frederick W. Shaffer (Connie) of Quincy and William M. Shaffer (Gloria) of Fowler, IL; two sisters, Carolyn S. Masterson of New Mexico and Frances M. Campbell (Jeff) of Coatsburg, IL; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; eight brothers; six sisters; and a longtime companion, Jerome Ripperda.

Throughout her life, Hilda exemplified hard work and adaptability. She was a proud employee at the Motorola plant up until 1978 and then at Sheller-Globe until 1985. With the close of one chapter came the opening of another, as Hilda turned her talents to the art of upholstery. Lastly, she dedicated herself to the safety and well-being of children as a school crossing guard at St. Dominic School, a role she held dear until her retirement in 2022 due to health concerns.

A woman of faith, Hilda was baptized in the Catholic Church and lived her life with grace and compassion. Her interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. She was an avid collector of porcelain dolls and an assortment of knick-knacks, each piece telling a story of her life’s journey. Hilda’s love for canning tomatoes and pickles was well-known, and her homemade preserves were a testament to her culinary skills. She cherished her trips to the Lake of the Ozarks with her sister-in-law, Carol, where they shared laughter and created lasting memories.

Music was a source of joy for Hilda, particularly the old country tunes that spoke to her soul. She was a regular at country shows, where she reveled in the melodies and the camaraderie of fellow music lovers. Above all, Hilda’s greatest pleasure was found in the company of her family and friends. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she embraced every moment spent with them.
