Janet Ehrhardt – Hansen-Spear
Janet Ehrhardt, 106 of Good Samaritan Home, formerly 8426 White Oak Road, Quincy died January 7, 2025 at the Home.
She was born April 8, 1918 in Melrose Township, a daughter of Harlow Edward and Dora Lucy Bliven Miller. She married Alfred Ehrhardt on June 18, 1938 in Palmyra, Missouri. He died September 13, 2007. Al and Janet were fortunate enough to have celebrated 69 years of marriage together in June of 2007.
Janet was born on her family farm and was the oldest of 8 brothers and 1 sister. Mrs. Ehrhardt attended White Oak School. Her husband Alfred had already taken over his family farm several years before they married and when they got married, both Janet and Alfred were actively engaged in farming all of their life together. Their farm was designated with “Centennial Farm Status” in 2004. In the year 2004 the Ehrhardt’s had a wonderful 100 year farm celebration with their family and friends.
Mrs. Ehrhardt was also active in the retail clothing business. In 1957 she helped to open the new Three Sisters Clothing Store in the Town and Country Legion Shopping Center, now the Quincy Mall. Her retail career spanned over 30 years with working also at J.C. Penney’s, when it was located in downtown Quincy. She also worked at State Street Store, Reba’s, Lundeen’s and Merkel’s where she retired in 1987. Mrs. Ehrhardt was also a Co-founder/owner of the original Sheridan Swim Club.
She was a member of the Ellington Presbyterian Church and a past member of the Home Extension for many years and a life member of Good Samaritan Home.
Janet was a woman of immense kindness and deep family pride. Her warm heart and loving personality endeared her to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be remembered for her resilience in the face of adversity. Above all, Janet’s greatest joy and source of fulfillment was her family.
Survivors include one daughter: Janie Fischer and her husband, D.D. of Quincy, Illinois and a son-in-law, Mike Simmons of Golden, Colorado, one sister-in-law, Phyllis Miller Brueggeman of Quincy, and many loving nieces and nephews that she always enjoyed spending time with.
Nine grandchildren: Lori Cornwell and her husband, Neal of Quincy, Lynn Sawyer and her husband, Tom of Winter Park, Florida, Doug Dittmer of Deland, Florida, Lesa Hersom and her husband Brian of Cocoa, Florida, Dustin Dittmer and his wife, Calley of Winter Springs, Florida, Nicole McChesney and her husband, Don of Miramar, Florida, Nathan Simmons and his wife Karyn of Carbondale, Colorado, Ryan Fischer and his partner Darren Taylor of Kansas City, Missouri and Michael Fischer and his wife Jessica of Chicago, Illinois.
Twenty-one great grandchildren: Nicole (Cornwell) Woodyard and her husband Chuck of Quincy, Scott Cornwell and his wife Kristina of Chatham, Illinois and Matthew Cornwell of Quincy, Illinois, Kristin (Sawyer) Rebeck and her husband, Mike of Davisonville, Maryland, Tommy Sawyer and his wife Shannon of Gig Harbor, Washington, and Rebecca (Sawyer) Kilgore and her husband, Matthew of Trent Woods, North Carolina, Gabrielle (Dittmer) Grimaldi and her husband Mike of Oviedo, Florida and D.J. Dittmer of Deland, Florida. Adam Taylor and his wife Rachel of San Marcos, California, Dylan Taylor of Los Angeles, California, Lea (Taylor) Aldag and her husband Peter of Columbus, Ohio Abby Marley and Elly Caroline Dittmer of Winter Springs, Florida, Donny McChesney, Jr. and his wife Tiffany of Weston, Florida, Nicholas McChesney and his wife Tara of Plantation, Florida, Michael and Ruby McChesney of Miramar, Florida and Emma (McChesney) Manda and her husband, Luke of Sunrise, Florida and Fritz, Tacie, and Liv Simmons of Carbondale, Colorado.
Fourteen great great grandchildren: Haley, Logan, Colin, and Charlotte,and Lincoln Woodyard of Quincy and Tommy Sawyer III, Avery, and Griffin Sawyer of Gig Harbor, Washington, twin boys, Sawyer and Logan Rebeck of Davisonville, Maryland, Everlee Cornwell of Chatham, Illinois and Colton Kilgore of Trent Woods, North Carolina, Michael Grimaldi III of Fern Park, Florida, and Amelia Manda of Sunrise, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Ehrhardt, and her daughters, Sharon Dittmer and Donna Simmons, and her parents, Harlow and Dora Miller, eight brothers: Robert, Francis, Luther, Otis, Donald, Russell, Herbert, and William Miller. One sister, Mary Chase, six brother-in-laws: Edward, Wilfred and Jerome Ehrhardt, Bert Willer, Leo Stupavsky, and Bob Chase. Eleven sister-in-laws: Florence Miller, Gladys Miller, Jean and Georgene Miller, Ethel Miller, Shirley Miller, Lucille Miller Haschemeyer, Betty Miller, Isabelle Stupavsky, Eleanor Willer, and Stella Ehrhardt.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Scott, Dr. Irv Schwartz, Dr. Adam Reyburn, Dr. Tim Morgan, Dr. Dennis Wagner, Dr. Kevin Ballard and their nurses and staff, for the outstanding medical care they gave Mrs. Ehrhardt throughout her life. Mrs. Ehrhardt always prided herself in the fact that she was one of Dr. Scott’s and Dr. Schwartz’s first patients when the Doctors first came to Quincy and were trying to get their medical practices going. The family would also like to thank Good Samaritan Home for the care they have given to Janet over the past 18 years.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025 at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, 1535 State Street, Quincy.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Ellington Church, 4600 North 36th Street, Quincy. There will be no graveside service. A luncheon at the church will be held immediately after the service. All family and friends are invited
