Joan Theresa Olps — O’Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home
Joan Theresa Olps, 90, of Quincy, passed away at 12:20 am Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at Sunset Home in Quincy, IL.
Joan was born January 3, 1934, in Quincy, IL to Frank and Elise (Luecken) Olps.
Joan is survived by nineteen nieces and nephews, Debbie Kado (Don), Pam Hueseman (Al), Geri Armitage, Brad Heinze (Susan), Karen Hummel (Steve), Brian Heinze (Beth), Ronda Diane Decuir, Shelly Mitchell (Patrick), Randy Olps, Barb Seeley (Dwight), Rick Olps, Kathy Seifert, Janet Ward, Don Olps (Brenda), Carol Howard, David Olps (Ann), Mary Jo Yurkovich (Dave), Mike Olps (Lynn), and Linda Olps.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Norma J. Heinze; three brothers, Frank Olps Jr., Richard Olps, and Harold Olps; one niece, Connie Olps; and two nephews, Reggie Olps and Rod Olps.
Joan attended Quincy Notre Dame High School, graduating in 1951. Her career began shortly thereafter, as she became a dedicated telephone operator for Illinois Bell and later AT&T. Joan’s commitment to her work was evident in her 33 years of service before retiring in 1984.
After retirement, Joan remained an active member of her community. She was a devout member of Blessed Sacrament Church, where her faith was a cornerstone of her life. Joan also continued her involvement with the Pioneers Group Illinois Bell Ladies.
Joan’s interests were as varied as they were passionate. She was an avid card player, with Liverpool rummy being her game of choice. Her love for jigsaw puzzles was well-known, as was her penchant for enjoying a good nap. Joan loved to go dancing at the Eagles Club with her boyfriend, Don. A lover of animals, Joan had a special place in her heart for dogs, particularly dachshunds, whose playful spirit matched her own. Her laughter and love for life were infectious, and she brought light and joy to every gathering. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Memorial Service at Blessed Sacrament Church and burial at St. Boniface will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Blessed Sacrament Church.
