Joanne C. Scarbrough, age 84, of Quincy, died on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 in Blessing Hospital. She was born on December 4, 1940 in Quincy the daughter of Carl and Catherine (Schulte) Liesen. Joanne was a graduate of Notre Dame High School. She married Ronald Scarbrough on November 16, 1960. He preceded her in death on August 3, 2000.
After graduating high school, Joanne worked at Deter’s and later at Brown Drug, where she met the love of her life, Ron. While raising their two children, she and her husband built a successful business, founding T-Shirts Plus and eventually expanding to Athlete’s Foot stores in Quincy, Columbia, and Kirksville.
Upon retirement, they relocated to Hilton Head, South Carolina, where they enjoyed the beach, golf, and the company of many dear friends. After Ron’s passing, Joanne returned to Quincy to be close to her beloved grandchildren, never missing a dance recital, sporting event, or graduation.
A lifelong reader, Joanne could always be found with a good book in hand. During football season, she was proud to cheer on the Texas Longhorns where her grandson Jackson is an alumnus. Joanne was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she prayed for her family daily. That faith never wavered, guiding her through life with grace and love. She found great joy in supporting others, always offering a listening ear, words of wisdom, and unwavering kindness to those in need.
She is survived by:
CHILDREN: Jill Borrowman (Chris) of New Canton, IL and Mark Scarbrough of Quincy.
GRANDCHILDREN: Jackson Borrowman of Austin, TX, Paige Borrowman of Chicago, IL and Blair Borrowman of St. Louis, MO; Taylor Heimann (Taylor) of Quincy and Brayden Scarbrough also of Quincy.
GREAT-GRANDCHILD: Tatum Heimann
SIBLINGS: Jim Liesen, Janet Schreacke (Kent), John Liesen (Judy), Jeff Liesen (Kathy) and Judy Walker (Dave).
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
In addition to her husband, Joanne was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother: Jerry Liesen in infancy and a sister-in-law: RoseAnn Liesen
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at 11:00 AM in St. Peter Catholic Church. Interment in St. Boniface Cemetery. There is no visitation, but friends are invited to the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Adoption Center of Illinois. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
