Karen Kay Reitz — O’Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home

Karen Kay Reitz, 77, of Quincy, passed away at 7:35 am Sunday, August 4, 2024, at Quincy Healthcare and Senior Living Center.

Karen was born October 7, 1946, in Quincy, IL to Donald E. and Marjorie (Kestner) Zoller.

Survivors include her three siblings, Doug Zoller (Laura), Diane Leuders, and Katey Haun; five nieces; two nephews; one aunt; and multiple cousins.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents; her grandparents; aunts; uncles; and cousins.

After graduating from Central High School in Camp Point, IL in 1964, Karen’s pursuit of academic excellence led her to Western Illinois University, where she not only earned a Bachelor of Science in Speech Correction but also formed lifelong bonds as a member of the Tri Sigma Sorority. Karen furthered her education at the University of Wisconsin, attaining her Master’s degree in Communication Disorders. Her career as a speech therapist in the Chicago area left a lasting impact on numerous lives, highlighting her dedication to helping others overcome obstacles.

Following her professional career, Karen demonstrated a continued commitment to learning and service by working as a volunteer tutor, sharing her skills and knowledge with those in need. A devout member of the Lutheran Church of St. John, Karen found solace and strength in her faith, often seen reading her bible and living by its teachings.

Karen’s commitment to public service was evident in her active role in the Brain Trauma Public Relations and her engagement at the Quincy Senior Center, where she was a regular bingo enthusiast. One of Karen’s passions was her affection for the color purple, which she tastefully wore as a signature shade that reflected her vibrant personality. She never missed an opportunity to visit her alma mater, taking special birthday trips to Western Illinois University to reminisce and reconnect with her sorority.

A Graveside Service will be at 10:00 am Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at the Xander Cemetery in Liberty, IL. Pastor Steve Hayden will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Quincy Senior Center, the Brain Trauma Organization, or the Lutheran Church of St. John.
