Larry Dean Rice Sr. — O’Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home

Rice-Larry

Larry Dean Rice Sr., 79, of Quincy, passed away on June 9, 2024, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. Born on March 19, 1945, in Quincy, IL, to James “Jim” and Vera (Stephens) Rice, Larry’s life was one of dedication, service, and joy.

Larry’s early years in Quincy laid a strong foundation for a life full of love and hard work. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, an experience that instilled in him a sense of duty and pride. After his military service, Larry’s passion for driving led him to a lifelong career on the road. He was a dedicated driver for Schwartz Farm and Allied Van Lines and even spent time as a cab driver, sharing stories and smiles with everyone he met.

Larry’s love for travel was insatiable. He traversed all contiguous United States at least three times, always on the lookout for lava rocks to add to his meticulously decorated front yard. His adventurous spirit was matched by his love for simple pleasures, such as playing slots, buying scratch-off tickets, and immersing himself in the stories of old westerns and episodes of Bonanza.

A regular at Coach House, Larry was a beloved figure who enjoyed his meals there two to three times a day, so much so that he had his own chair. His presence will be deeply missed by the staff and patrons who knew him as a friend.

Larry leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. He is survived by his three children, Larry Dean Rice Jr. of Kansas City, MO, Nickie Williams (Steve) of Quincy, IL, and Shawn Rice (Christy) of Quincy, IL.; several grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and Mickie Allen Ray, his lifelong friend.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his brothers Jimmy and Carl Rice, his sister Norma Dimmitt, and his daughter Teresa “Teri” Mears. Larry’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, but his memory will continue to inspire and comfort.

Larry Dean Rice Sr.’s life was a journey filled with purpose, friendship, and love. His story is one of a life well-lived and a man well-loved.
