Larry Dean Sparks, age 77, of Payson, IL, died on Tuesday, July 30 2024 at 9:15 a.m. in his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Larry was born on July 14, 1947 in Quincy, the son of Clifford “Tip” and Betty Wilson Sparks. On February 14, 1970, he married Carol Lynn Hadfield in Durham, MO. She survives.

Larry was a 1965 graduate of Quincy High School. Larry served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 until his honorable discharge in 1969.

Larry was a professional truck driver for over 30 years, and he had been employed by both Gully Transportation and McNay Truck Lines. After his retirement, Larry continued to drive for Sny Farms, and he taught CDL certification at John Wood Community College.

In his spare time, Larry enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether he was hunting, especially deer hunting, or fishing. He was an avid fan of all sports, with golf and NASCAR being his particular favorites. Larry was also fanatical about the National Hot Rod Association, and he owned an extensive collection of John Force cars.

Larry was a life-time member of South Side Boat Club.

Most of all, Larry loved spending time with his grandchildren, especially when he was cheering them on at their various sporting events.

In addition to his wife, Lynn, survivors include two sons: Chris Sparks of Payson, IL; and Ryan Sparks of New London, MO; five grandchildren: Tanner and Taylor Sparks of Palmyra, MO; and Logan, Devin, and Nolan Sparks of Payson, IL; his sister, Nancy Dennison of Murphysboro, IL; a niece, Kim Stearns of Murphysboro, IL; and a great nephew, Jaden Stearns of Carbondale, IL.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside Service: 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 2, 2024 at Payson New Cemetery, with Rev. Earl Wiseman officiating.

Burial: Payson New Cemetery with military honors provided by Payson VFW Post 2061 and the United States Army Funeral Honors Detail.
