Lionel E. Wheeler (Douglas), 70, of Quincy, passed away at 9:30 pm Saturday, August 10, 2024, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

Friends and Family are invited to Lionel’s Celebration of Life at a visitation that will be held Friday, August 16, 2024, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at O’Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home in Quincy, IL. A Graveside Service will follow at 12:00 pm at Greenmount Cemetery in Quincy. Rev. Dr. Orville Jones will officiate.

Lionel was born January 6, 1954, in Quincy, IL to Chatton Wheeler. Lionel was a man of many talents and interests. He spent his professional life touching the lives of others, with his culinary skills at Tower Pizza, meticulous work in car detailing, and a strong presence as a bouncer. Beyond his work, he was a proud member of the Baptist community.

Lionel’s zest for life could be seen in his myriad of interests. He was an avid fisherman, taking pleasure in the tranquility of Canton Shutte and North Bottoms. A master of the card table, he found joy in spirited games of spades, poker, and tonk. He was also known for his love of gambling-trying his luck with the slots at Mark Twain Casino. Lionel found solace in shooting pool and bingo and was a fervent fan of college and NBA basketball and college and NFL football. His spare time often included watching karate movies, enjoying the soulful sounds of soul and R&B music, and spreading laughter to everyone he met.

Survivors include his five children, Will Flot, Shanelle Douglas, Thaddeus Douglas, Trent Douglas, and Dane Douglas; two grandchildren, Isaac Douglas and Elijah Douglas; two brothers, Avery Jackson and Lawrence “Poochie” Douglas; one sister, Cassandra Glassford and her husband, Earl; one sister in-law, Jeanie Smith; one aunt, Mary Jane Ayers; many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Lionel was preceded in death by his mother; two brothers, Larry Smith and Derrick Douglas; one sister in-law, Virginia Douglas; and one grandson.

Pallbearers will be Dominic Douglas, Joe Douglas, Joe Karhoff, Randy Rudd, Brandon Douglas, and Carvill Taylor. Bobby Taute will be an honorary pallbearer.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family to help with final expenses.
