McMullen-Marjorie

Marjorie Idell McMullen (née Ward), a lifelong resident of Quincy, Ill., passed away peacefully on May 26, 2025, in Frederick, Md., at the age of 102.

She was born in Pike County, Ill., on October 23, 1922, and attended Gilgal Grade School before graduating from Pleasant Hill High School. She married William I. McMullen on September 29, 1947, in Pittsfield, Ill. He preceded her in death on December 11, 1997.

Marjorie was employed in the Quincy University Business Office for more than 30 years. She had previously worked in the State Attorney’s Office in Pittsfield, as a waitress, and a secretary for other businesses.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she served in many roles, including chairing the administrative board and the United Methodist Women’s Circle, and being part of the Pastor Parish, Education, and Finance Committees. She also taught Sunday School for over 35 years.

After her daughter was born, Marge volunteered for and was employed as a teacher’s aide in the Quincy Schools’ Deaf Department. In her later years, she volunteered for the Quincy Fire Department and Quincy Senior Center.

Marjorie wasn’t all work and no play, though. She had many hobbies, including reading, writing poetry, sharing her wry sense of humor with her family, and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Anita C. Kroll (Kent), granddaughter Trudy Suggs, great-grandchildren Eavan Shank, Keene Shank, Blane Shank, and Maise Shank, and grandson-in-law Randy Shank, all of Frederick, Md.
The sole survivor of seven siblings, Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband William.
