Mary Snowden — Hansen-Spear

Mary Snowden, age 95, of Quincy, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at 8:05 p.m. in her home.

Mary was born on May 16, 1929 in Wheaton, IL, a daughter of J.D.L. “Roy” and Ester Tuthill Langan. She married Howard Snowden in December of 1952 in Wheaton, IL.

Mary earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Denison University in Grandville, OH in 1951 and a Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Illinois in 1953. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, she taught mathematics at Quincy Senior High School and Quincy College before working for over forty years as an office manager at Roy Bennett Furniture, retiring in 2015. Mary was an avid golfer and league bowler. Mary was a big fan of Illini sports and Chicago sports, especially the Chicago Cubs. She often visited her son, Sam, in Chicago, where they enjoyed attending both opera performances and Cubs games.

Mary was a longtime member of First Union Congregational Church.

Survivors include her son, Sam Snowden of Chicago, IL; and her sister, Janet Langan of Tacoma Park, MD.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and a son, James “Jim” Snowden.

Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at First Union Congregational Church.

Service: 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2025 at First Union Congregational Church with Rev. Jesse Patton officiating.

Burial: Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, IL
