Melvin D. Cheney

Cheney-Melvin

Melvin D. Cheney, 63, of Quincy, passed away at 2:18 pm Sunday, April 21, 2024.

Born on March 30, 1961, in Quincy, IL, Melvin was the beloved son of Seldon “Dean” and Myrtle (Shuler) Cheney. His life was a testament to the love and joy he brought to those around him.
On May 16, 1981, Melvin married his soulmate, Tina M. VanOrder, at Payson Road Church in Quincy, IL. Their union was blessed with love, laughter, and three wonderful sons. Tina survives him, carrying forward the light of their shared memories.

A proud father, Melvin is also survived by his sons, Kevin Cheney (Krista), Brian Cheney (Shannon), and Darren Cheney. His life was further enriched by the presence of his six grandchildren, Kelsey Bolte, DJ Beath, Aubree Cheney, Cassidy Cheney, Allie Cheney, and Landon Cheney, as well as a great-grandson, Brekken Beath. Melvin’s extended family included several nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.

Melvin was preceded in death by his father, Seldon Cheney, his sister, Patti Cheney, and one grandson, Lucas Cheney. Their memories remain a cherished part of his story.

A graduate of Quincy High School in 1979, Melvin was a hardworking and dedicated employee. His career spanned several companies, including Swift Factory, John’s Home Center, and Hollister & Whitney. His strong work ethic and reliability were hallmarks of his professional life.

Melvin’s interests were as varied as they were passionate. An avid fisherman, he found peace and solitude by the water. Camping was another of his joys, with Lazy Days Campground in Canton, MO, and Midwest Old Threshers in Mt. Pleasant, IA, being some of his favorite retreats. Racing was more than a hobby; it was a passion, with Nascar and Quincy Raceways being regular fixtures in his life.
Melvin’s love for his pets was unparalleled; dogs and cats were constant companions throughout his life. His handy nature meant he was always tinkering, fixing, and improving things around the house. Westerns and mystery investigation shows captivated him on TV, but it was his role as a family man that truly defined him. Making breakfast for his mother every morning and cherishing time spent with his family were the moments he valued most. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Friends and Family are invited to Melvin’s Life Celebration at a visitation that will be Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at O’Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home in Quincy, IL.
