Richard Ferdinand Scholz III (Riff) — O’Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home
Richard Ferdinand Scholz III (Riff), 74, of Quincy, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2025, at his home in Quincy, IL.
Riff was born January 16, 1951, in Macon, GA to Richard F. Scholz Jr. and Ellen (Willis) Scholz. He was married to Susan B. Tiemann on January 17, 2009 in Quincy, IL.
Other survivors include his four siblings, George Scholz, Beth Scholz, Joe Scholz (Kris), and Tom Scholz (Lisa); nieces and nephews, Brittany Austin (Ethan), Sarah Wilcox (Thomas), Ryan Scholz (Kaylyn), Everly Austin, Ellis Austin, Libby Austin, and Hudson Scholz; Lynn Scholz; his mother in-law, Alice Solter; Susan’s children, Scott Dean, Amelia Dean (Sam), and Brandon Dean (Erica); and Susan’s grandchildren, Alijah, Julian, and Tara.
Riff was preceded in death by his parents; one niece, Corey Scholz; and many beloved cousins, aunts, and uncles.
Riff achieved his undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois Champaign and earned his Juris Doctorate from Loyola University. Riff’s passion for justice and advocacy led him to a distinguished career in criminal defense, beginning in the Public Defender’s office of Cook County and later serving on the Murder Task Force in Chicago. In 1983, he made his mark in the Homicide Litigation of the Missouri Public Defenders Office in St. Louis. Riff returned to Quincy in the 1990s, when he opened his private practice with Lisa Oakley, later establishing Scholz Law Office and committing his life to serving the community with dedication and compassion.
Riff was a true fan of the Chicago Cubs, living in one of the original rooftop bleacher buildings in the 80s. He was also loyal to the Chicago Bears. His love for the arts was profound; he found inspiration in art museums around the world and had an enduring passion for the works of Shakespeare. Riff’s knowledge of old movies was unparalleled, and he could identify actors from the 30s and 40s with just a glance. In the kitchen, he delighted family and friends with his culinary prowess. His adventurous spirit led him to travel, creating unforgettable memories on overseas trips with his wife, Susan. Riff’s story is one for the ages. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
The family would like to recognize the support they received from Blessing Hospice during his last year of life.
Cremation is under the direction of O’Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home. A remembrance will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the S.T.E.M. Lab at St. Peter School, which was founded in honor of Wilhelm Johnson Scholz.
