Roy Baker – Hansen-Spear
Roy William Baker, age 94, of Quincy, died on December 31, 2024 at 2:45 pm in Blessing Hospital.
He was born on February 28, 1930, in Quincy, Illinois, a son of William H. and Alice Wisman Baker. He married Ruth E. Wear on January 21, 1952 in the parsonage of the Lutheran Church of St. John, in Quincy.
Roy was a lifelong grain and livestock farmer in Adams County. He raised both hogs and cattle, and cattle were his favorite. He was also a craftsman, building their family home and many of the buildings on his farm. Roy was a former Adams County 4H leader and member of the Adams County Farm Bureau. He coached and umpired 4H softball for many years.
He served in the Illinois National Guard from 1951-1953. Roy was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church of St. John, where he served on various committees over the years and as an elder. He was a dedicated blood donor. He had donated 91 pints, saving 273 lives.
Roy loved God, his wife, children, and the land.
In addition to his wife of 72 years, Ruth, he is survived by four children, Michael “Mike” (Gina) Baker of Quincy, Diane Moulton of Acworth, GA, Donna Ellsworth, Acworth, GA, Darrell (Kim) Baker of Maryland Heights, MO; nine grandchildren, Kimberley (Josh) Lightfoot and family of Gilbertsville, KY, Scott (Missy) Baker and family of Quincy, Jason (Tiffany) Ellsworth and family of Acworth, GA, Heidi (Todd) Peacock and family of Orlando, FL, Kenny (Erin) Ellsworth and family of Cartersville, GA, Brian (Amanda) Ellsworth of Cartersville, GA, Joseph Keesee and family of St. Louis, MO, Jordan (Stephanie) Keesee and family of St. Louis, MO, and Brett (Anna) Baker of St. Louis, MO; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Wilma Tieman of Golden, IL; a sister-in-law, Melba Baker of Quincy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, Dave Ellsworth, a brother, Harold Baker, three sisters-in-law, and a brother-in-law.
Visitation: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Monday, January 13, 2025 at the Lutheran Church of St. John, in Quincy.
Service: 12:00 pm on Monday, January 13, 2025 at the Lutheran Church of St. John, with Rev. Steve Hayden officiating.
Burial: Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois
