Terry L. Steffen – O’Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home

Steffen-Terry

Terry L. Steffen, 81, of Quincy, passed away at 12:09 pm Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

Terry was born July 23, 1942, in Quincy, IL to William F. and Betty (Schnelbacher) Steffen. He was married to Charlotte K. Reynolds on November 9, 1963 in Grace United Methodist Church in Quincy, IL and they remained close friends throughout life. She survives.

Other survivors include his two sons, Steven Steffen (Debbie) and Kurt Steffen (Angie), both of Quincy, IL; four grandchildren, Stephanie Steffen, Harley Kindhart, Taylor Wollbrink (Josh), and Cassandra Steffen; and six great-grandchildren, Damon, Dillon, Devin, Erica, Elijah, and Cooper.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Billie Ann Riddle and Sandra Grannan.

Professionally, Terry was known for his skill and dedication. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for RL Davis Construction and later channeled his expertise into his own business, Terry Steffen Excavating, until his retirement in 2017. His membership in the Operators Union Local 513 was a source of pride and camaraderie.

Beyond his work, Terry was a man of many interests and talents. His mechanical aptitude was legendary; he could often be found working on cars for friends or tinkering with his own construction equipment. Terry’s passion for car races was undeniable. He not only enjoyed watching them but also actively participated, racing his beloved ’55 Chevy at Kahoka, Keokuk, Quincy Raceways, and Whitehall.

The river was Terry’s sanctuary. From his youthful days of commercial fishing with his father to boat racing on its currents, the Mississippi held a special place in his heart. Even after his racing days, he found solace at the lock and dam, watching the barges and the birds, especially the eagles.

Terry’s talents extended to the kitchen, where he was known as a very good cook. His culinary skills were just another facet of his multifaceted life. In his free time, he could be found tackling landscaping jobs or simply enjoying the beauty of nature that he so loved.

Terry’s life was a testament to the joy of active engagement with the world around him. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
