Virgil D. Mittelberg, age 92, of Quincy, died Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 8:57 pm in Good Samaritan Home.

Virgil was born June 24, 1931 in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Lester H. and Ethel Mae Shriver Mittelberg. He married Aleen Hagerbaumer on April 25, 1952 at Salem Church in Quincy. She survives.

Virgil was a 1949 graduate of Quincy Senior High School where he was very active in the FFA, earning the American Farmer Degree. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves and was called to active duty in 1953 – 1954. After his active duty, he remained in the Army reserves for a number of years. Virgil was a self employed farmer all his life and was a life time member of the Farm Bureau. He served on the Adams County Board for 16 years. The Mittelbergs were long time members of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ and had been attending Central Baptist Church prior to Virgil’s admission to Good Samaritan Home. They were active in many area groups, including Salem Couples Club, two local bridge clubs, and the Old Tyme Association. They owned and operated Twin Mill Korn as a non profit for many years; making kettlecorn both locally and in South Texas. In his spare time, Virgil enjoyed inventing and creating things with metal. He also enjoyed skiing and elk hunting in Colorado. Virgil was a hard working and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Aleen, include: three children, Mark (Beth) Mittelberg of Bowling Green, KY, parents of Karena Etters and Julia Mittelberg, Linda (Mike) Rice of O’Fallon, IL, parents of Heather Rice, Joanna Faucett, and Joel (Amelia) Rice, and Lori (Doug) Schroeder of Sun City West, AZ, parents of Logan Schroeder; six great grandchildren, Brayden and Alexander Mittelberg, and their foster sister, Chance and Chase Faucett, and Cheyenne Rice; and a sister, Velma Klusmeyer of Quincy.

Virgil was preceded in death by: his parents, Lester H. and Ethel Mae Mittelberg; a daughter, Karen Mittelberg; and two great grandchildren, Brandy and Charity Faucett.

Visitation: 9:00 am – 11:00 am, Monday June 10, 2024 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home

Services: 11:00 am Monday, June 10, 2024 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with Chaplain Josh Vahle officiating. Burial will follow in Greenmount Cemetery.
