Barry man sentenced to nine years in Illinois DOC after meth-related investigation

BARRY, Ill. — James A., Kurtz, 41, of Barry was sentenced March 8 to nine years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after a methamphetamine-related investigation.

The investigation began on January 10 when Chief Deputy Zack Orr, while working for the Village of Hull, conducted a traffic stop on McCraney Creek Road near Ill. 106.  

Kurtz, the driver, was arrested for:

  • Unlawful possession of methamphetamine less than five grams; 
  • Unlawful possession of hypodermic syringes;
  • Driving under the unfluence (any amount of drug);
  • Unlawful possession of adult-use cannabis in a motor vehicle;
  • Improper use of turn signal;
  • Pike County, Illinois, warrant for petition for revocation of probation;
  • Pike County, Illinois, warrant for failure to appear.

Kurtz was on mandatory supervised release from the Illinois Department of Corrections at the time.
