HANNIBAL, Mo. — The Hannibal Police Department is warning citizens of recent scam calls,  messages or emails from people impersonating police officers or federal employees.

These scammers will tell victims they have warrants in their name for failure to appear at a court date or jury duty and demand payment.  These calls may appear to be coming from phone numbers associated with local police agencies, and they may send documents that look official.

The Hannibal Police Department said in a press release it is reminding the public that police officers will never solicit payment from people over the phone. If you receive one of these phone calls:

  • Do not feel pressured to act. Scammers may have publicly available information about you, but this does not mean they are legitimate. Verify by calling the appropriate agency at their correct listed number.
  • Police officers will never demand payment by phone. Do not give your credit card number, financial information or wire transfer money to anyone you do not know.
  • Share with others. Let your friends and family know these calls are scams to help protect them from becoming a victim.
