Summaries of criminal cases disposed in May 2023 in Marion County, Mo.

The following reports are summaries of all cases disposed during May 2023 in Marion County, Mo. The reports are provided by the office of Luke Bryant, the Marion County Prosecutor.

The following case was heard on May 1 in the Circuit Court of Marion County, Missouri, Honorable Rachel Bringer-Shepherd presiding.

Garrett G. Wassell, 32, of Maywood, Mo., pleaded guilty to felony assault. Wassell admitted on June 6, 2020, he acted in concert with another, recklessly caused physical injury to a male victim. Wassell placed the victim in a choke hold and was held till the victim was unconscious. The victim suffered bruising and swelling on his neck. Bringer-Shepherd granted Wassell a suspended imposition sentence and placed him on five years felony supervised probation under several conditions, including that he successfully completes counseling and pay restitution. That case was investigated by the Palmyra Police Department. 

The following case was heard on May 1 with Judge Talley Smith presiding:

Emily Elisabeth Smashey, 31, of Hannibal, Mo., pleaded guilty to domestic assault. Smashey admitted that on Sept. 20, 2022, she knowingly caused physical injury to a female victim by biting the victim who was related by blood. Smashey became angry when the victim would not give her money. The victim suffered from bleeding of her two right fingers from Smashey biting her. Smith granted Smashey a suspend imposition sentence and placed her on five years felony supervised probation under several conditions, including that she successfully completes counseling. That case was investigated by the Hannibal Police Department. 

The following cases were heard on May 5 with Judge Rachel Bringer-Shepherd presiding:

Jeffery Richard Dietle, 33, of Hannibal, Mo., pleaded guilty to felony possession of a controlled substance. Dietle admitted that on May 21, 2022, he possessed methamphetamine, a controlled substance. A witness reported a van had been parked near her residence. Law enforcement found Dietle asleep. He was taken into custody for outstanding warrants.  During the law enforcement officer’s search, a small baggie with a white crystalline substance was found in Dietle’s right shorts pocket.  The item tested positive for methamphetamine. Bringer-Shepherd sentenced Dietle to seven years in prison but suspended execution of that sentence and placed him on five years felony supervised probation under several conditions, including that he successfully completes counseling.  That case was investigated by the Hannibal Police Department.

Dietle also pleaded guilty to felony possession of a controlled substance. He admitted that on July 29, 2022, he possessed methamphetamine, a controlled substance. While Dietle was being escorted to the police department, he removed an item from the rear pocket area of his pants and attempted to place it on the rear passenger floorboard. A white crystalline substance was observed on the rear passenger seating. A small baggie with more white crystalline substance was found in his wallet clip. The items tested positive for methamphetamine. Bringer-Shepherd sentenced Dietle to seven years in prison but suspended execution of that sentence and placed him on five years felony supervised probation under several conditions, including that he successfully completes counseling.  That case was investigated by the Hannibal Police Department.

Brandon Tyler Haislet, 23, of Hannibal, Mo., pleaded guilty to felony assault. Haislet admitted that on Sept. 22, 2021, he attempted to cause physical injury to a male victim by means of a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument by hitting the victim on the left side of his head with a brick. The victim suffered with a large open wound and a cut on the left side of his head near his eye. Bringer-Shepherd sentenced Haislett to five years in prison but suspended execution of that sentence and placed him on five years felony supervised probation under several conditions, including that he successfully completes counseling. That case was investigated by the Hannibal Police Department.

The following case was heard on May 11 with Judge Rachel Bringer-Shepherd presiding:

Jason Reed, 19, of Hannibal, Mo., pleaded guilty to felony assault.  Reed admitted that on January 18, 2023 he knowingly caused physical injury to a male victim by punching him. The victim suffered with a laceration on top of his head, cuts on his face and cuts on his hand. Bringer-Shepherd granted Reed a suspend imposition sentence and placed him on five years felony supervised probation under several conditions, including that he successfully completes counseling.  That case was investigated by the Hannibal Police Department.

The following cases were heard on May 16 with Judge Rachel Bringer-Shepherd presiding:

Ashley Marie Clayton, 36, of Hannibal, Mo., pleaded guilty to class E felony of possession of burglar’s tools. Clayton admitted that on Jan. 4, 2023, she possessed a hammer and screwdriver, which were tools adapted, designed and commonly used for committing or facilitating offenses involving forcible entry into premises, and she possessed such tools with a purpose to use the same in making an unlawful forcible entry into an inhabitable structure or a room thereof.  Clayton was found as a passenger in a vehicle that had left a residence that was attempting to be broken into.  The hammer and screwdriver were found inside the vehicle where Clayton was sitting. Bringer-Shepherd sentenced Clayton to serve two years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.  That case was investigated by the Hannibal Police Department.

Levi M. Davis, 25, of Hannibal, Mo., pleaded guilty to class D felony of assault.  Davis admitted that on April 30, 2022, he caused physical injury to a male victim by punching him. The victim and Davis were at the area of Main Street where multiple witness reported Davis had punched the victim.  The victim was taken to the hospital. He suffered lacerations to his forehead and behind his ear that required stitches. Bringer-Shepherd sentenced Davis to serve five years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.  That case was investigated by the Hannibal Police Department.

Alexis Nicole Smashey, 23, of Hannibal, Mo., pleaded guilty to a Class C felony of attempt to deliver a controlled substance. Smashey admitted on May 2, 2022, she mailed a postcard with buprenorphine to an inmate incarcerated at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. An employee at the sheriff’s office located the suboxone strip located on the postcard.  Bringer-Shepherd sentenced Smashey to seven years in prison but suspended execution of that sentence and placed her on five years felony supervised probation under several conditions, including that she successfully completes counseling.  That case was investigated by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Logan White, 25, of Hannibal, Mo., plead guilty to a Class D felony of possession of a controlled substance. White admitted that on Feb. 27, 2022, he possessed methamphetamine, a controlled substance.  White had previously been terminated from Levering and on Feb. 27, 2022, he delivered a package to Levering. An employee of Levering searched the contents of the package and located a crystal-like substance and two syringes in it. The substance was tested positive for methamphetamine.  Bringer-Shepherd granted White a suspend imposition sentence and placed him on five years felony supervised probation under several conditions, including that he successfully completes counseling.  That case was investigated by the Hannibal Police Department. 

The following cases were heard on May 16 with Judge David C. Mobley presiding:

Terence Chatman, 38, of Hannibal, Mo., pleaded guilty to a Class B felony of domestic assault.  Chatman admitted that on Sept. 7, 2021, he threw boiling water on a female victim and such conduct was a substantial step toward the commission of the offense of domestic assault. The victim recently found out she was pregnant with Chatman’s child, and they had gotten in to an argument.  Chatman went to the kitchen, grabbed the pot of water that was being used to clean their infant’s bottles and threw the boiling water on the victim. The victim was airlifted to Mercy Hospital. Mobley sentenced Chatman to serve 10 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.  That case was investigated by the Hannibal   Police Department.

Jaron Wade Richards, 25, of Hannibal, Mo., pleaded guilty to a Class D felony of possession of a controlled substance. Richards admitted on Jan. 23, 2023, he possessed a pill that was not prescribed to him.  During a traffic stop, the pill was located inside of a pill bottle that was found inside Richards’ coat pocket.  The pill was found to be a mixture of acetaminophen and hydrocodone. Mobley sentenced Richards to seven years in prison but suspended execution of that sentence and placed him on five years felony supervised probation under several conditions, including that he successfully completes counseling. That case was investigated by the Hannibal Police Department.  

The following case were heard on May 18 with Judge Rachel Bringer-Shepherd presiding:

Jimmie Drell Trower, 49, of Hannibal, Mo., pleaded guilty to a Class D felony of receiving stolen property. Trower admitted that on March 13, 2022, he purposely deprived a female victim of her Heritage .22 revolver.  The victim met with her ex-boyfriend, Trower, at the riverfront for him to return her belongings to her.  Trower failed to return multiple items, one being the Heritage .22 revolver. Bringer-Shepherd sentenced Trower to seven years in prison but suspended execution of that sentence and placed him on five years felony supervised probation under several conditions, including that he successfully completes counseling.  That case was investigated by the Hannibal Police Department.

The following cases were heard on May 23, with Judge Rachel Bringer-Shepherd presiding:

Nathaniel Manley, 21, of Hannibal, Mo., pleaded guilty to a Class E felony of assault.  Manley admitted that on March 12, 2023, he knowingly caused physical injury to a male victim.  The victim was attacked by Manley, who had kicked him in the chest and face multiple times.  The victim was assessed by EMS. He had multiple injuries to his face and possible broken ribs. Bringer-Shepherd sentenced Manley to serve four years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.  That case was investigated by the Hannibal Police Department.

Nathaniel Manley, 21, of Hannibal, Mo., pleaded guilty to a Class E felony of assault.  Manley admitted that on March 26, 2023, he knowingly caused physical injury to a male victim. Manley hit the victim in the right eye. The victim suffered a scratch and swelling to the right eye. The Judge sentenced Manley to serve four years in the Missouri Department of Corrections concurrent to the previous case. That case was investigated by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. 

The following case was heard on May 23 with Judge Frederick Tucker presiding:

Raymond Dean Gum, 36, of Palmyra, Mo., pleaded guilty to a Class B felony of voluntary manslaughter, felony of armed criminal action and a Class D felony of unlawful possession of a firearm.  Gum admitted that on Sept. 3, 2021, he knowingly caused the death of a female victim by shooting her.  Gum admitted that on Sept. 3, 2021, he committed the felony of voluntary manslaughter by, with and through, the knowing use, assistance and aid of a deadly weapon.  Gum admitted that on Sept. 3, 2021, he knowingly possessed a 9mm handgun, a firearm, when he had previously been convicted of a felony residential burglary.  Tucker sentenced Gum to serve 25 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.  That case was investigated by the Palmyra Police Department, Marion County Sherriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
