The window through my wall

When we built our house on the bluffs of the Mississippi, we knew that it would be a work in progress.  Shackled with the burdens of expensive taste and limited funds, we made the decision to finish projects over time. The list included items such as adding tile to a bathroom and a fence one summer, then crown molding in the basement and a stamped concrete patio the next.

When Covid arrived, we had some extra time and that sweet government cash to check a few more wants off our bougie honey-do list.  But I also picked up some long-Covid issues, including a newfound obsession with plants.

We had always been plant hobbyists.  But with the lockdowns and all the packaging of fear and frustration the thought of nurturing something and keeping it alive was appealing.  Couple that with a large blank area high up on our kitchen wall that seemed to have been begging for renovation, and our most recent project came into focus.  A big window, with a big shelf under it, full of vibrant, green, corona-free life.

Now my husband is handy, but the thought of intentionally punching a Kool-Aid Man-sized hole in the wall and installing a window fell somewhat outside his comfort zone.  Equally uncomfortable was the price of having it installed.  So, when a chance discussion during a CYO volleyball game with Jason and Mindy Deters about their new window and siding business happened, we started to see the light from our future window.

Mike Shull’s sledge hammer was no match for Kool-Aid Man

The planning stage couldn’t have been any more comfortable and convenient. Instead of going to an overwhelming showroom, Mindy brought the showroom to us. The ease of making the big decisions down to the small details in the comfort of our own home and in front of the affected area, took the pressure off that comes with all the picturing and planning that happens when describing your vision to the designers.

Mindy and I exchanged numbers and, from there on, we were just a text away anytime we had a question when ordering exactly what we wanted in this window. She messaged us with updates as the window was being built, as custom-made windows can be somewhat of a lengthy process.

The window we chose was a custom-built gothic arch style made from Cardinal glass. It lines up beautifully with the arch in our ceiling and walls. I think the Dude would agree, that it really ties the room together.

The Dude abides.

At one point in the process, Mindy set up a meeting and measurements time with Austin Dannehold, the foreman on all their projects. Austin is a super friendly guy and he and his crew were super considerate when it came to construction times. There are times during the week where I close at the bar and do not get off work until 2 am, so they waited to start construction until later the next morning so I could get my sleep. Between strange work times and dogs who think they own the place; we managed to make the actual construction week happen with ease all with the convenience of communication through texts.

They were also considerate when it came to going in and out of our home. It’s not every day that you meet someone and then trust them with the keys to your house. Or trust them to knock a big hole in it. But Austin made us feel comfortable right from the start as we chatted and learned about our connections to each other within the community. Quincy seems to have a lot of those. We told him about our plant goals, and he was the Dude who really brought it life.

Well, our ecosystem is thriving, and we couldn’t be happier. I want to shout it from the window in my wall, but I thought what better way to share the news than with our Muddy River readers.

3-D Windows and Siding is a startup local company with trusted local names behind it. The Deters bring you some of the best products on the market, all backed by lifetime warranties. They also offer a one-year, worry-free installation warranty, giving you peace of mind.

Peace of mind seems to be where we are at right now in our little house on the bluff. Now that the light is shining through our dream window and our plants can thrive – there really does seem to be a peace of mind. I guess until the next project comes to mind.
