Payson Kickoff to Christmas tree-lighting event returns Dec. 4

Payson Kickoff to Christmas

PAYSON, Ill. — The Village of Payson has announced the return of its annual Christmas tree lighting event known as the Payson Kickoff to Christmas from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, in Payson’s South Park.

This year’s event offers free event entertainment and fun for the entire family. New activities and entertainment include a performance by Liz Bentley, an ugly sweater contest, food trucks and visits with Santa in his sleigh. Also included are stations for writing letters to Santa that can be put into his mailbox in the park, a coloring station, a Christmas story reading, free hot cocoa and candy canes.

In a press release, town trustee Kyle Beckman said, “Our event last year brought hundreds of people from our community and the surrounding area together for a great family event. This year will be even better. We’re growing our community and building traditions that we hope to last for generations.”

The Payson Fall Creek Fire Department’s Visits with Santa event, normally held at the firehouse, is joining forces with the Kickoff to Christmas. This will be the only chance to visit Santa in Payson before Christmas. Rossiter Photography will be available to take pictures.

The agenda for the event is as follows:

  • 3 p.m. – Santa arrives
  • 3:30-4 p.m. – Liz Bentley performs
  • 4 p.m. – Ugly sweater contest
  • 4:30 p.m. – Christmas story reading
  • 4:45 p.m. – Ugly sweater contest winners announced
  • 5 p.m. – Lighting of the tree/Santa departs

Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation item for local food banks and other organizations as well as an ornament to hang on the tree prior to the lighting.
