QUINCY — Altrusa International is a community service organization dedicated to literacy in the Adams County area.

In 2019, the club began sponsoring a literacy carnival for the K-5 students attending summer school in the Quincy Public Schools. Students are treated to games centered around reading and writing.  Prizes such as journals, notepads, pens and pencils are also given in order to carry out the theme. In addition, each student has the opportunity to choose a book and bookmark.

The Quincy club was awarded a $2,000 grant through the Altrusa International Foundation in 2021 in order to help cover the cost of the carnival.  Due to Covid-19 restrictions still being in place last summer we were unable to carry out the carnival as planned.  They were allowed to carry the grant into the 2022 year and shared their love of reading with the students on Wednesday, June 29.

Tracy Schlepphorst, a local author, attended the carnival this year.  She shared one of her Emotion Belly books through the use of breathing balls and yoga.

Our goal is to show students that reading and writing activities can be fun.  Hopefully our excitement will spark an interest in literacy that will carryover throughout the summer for these students.
