QUINCY — The Quincy Police Department invites people to take part in the city’s voluntary camera registration program.

“Many privately owned surveillance cameras were instrumental in the resolution of the (Becky) Bliefnick murder trial,” said a press release from the Quincy Police Department. “We encourage all residents with any type of camera system to help us by enrolling in this program.”

This program allows residents and business owners to register the location of their video surveillance systems with the Quincy Police Department to help deter and fight crime. Through this program, the Quincy Police Department will have the ability to quickly identify locations of cameras in nearby crime scenes and contact the owners to request video footage from those surveillance systems.

There is no fee to register a video surveillance systems. Registration is completely voluntary, and people can withdraw their registration at any time by contacting the Quincy Police Department. Registration can be completed on-line through QPD’s Programs and Service website.

After signing up, you will only be contacted by the Quincy Police Department if an incident is in the vicinity of your surveillance cameras. If a crime occurs near your registered surveillance cameras, you may be contacted by a member of the Quincy Police Department, who will request a copy of the video and/or images captured by your cameras over a specific time period that may assist in an investigation.

Questions about the program, registration process or withdrawing your registration can be directed to Sgt. Nickolas Eddy at neddy@quincyil.gov.
