Local Salvation Army lends hand to flood-damaged communities in St. Louis

QUINCY — The Salvation Army Quincy Area Command’s Emergency Disaster Team not only serves the
counties of Adams, Pike and Brown in Illinois and Marion, Ralls, Lewis, Shelby and Monroe in Missouri, but the organization also helps families in neighboring communities impacted by natural disasters.

Emergency disaster coordinator Jeremy Koren of The Salvation Army of Quincy recently was dispatched to assist communities in the St. Louis metro area affected by recent flash flooding. Koren serves as the operations chief in The Salvation Army’s Incident Command Structure. His responsibilities include assuring the safety of tactical operations, managing tactical operations, supervising the execution of operations, requesting additional resources to support tactical operations and maintaining close contact with operations personnel and other agencies involved in the incident. The Salvation Army Quincy Area Command’s mobile canteen also has been dispatched to assist with the operations.

“When I learned about the flash floods which occurred in St. Louis last week, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that The Salvation Army would be there to assist victims of the devastation with food, water, financial and spiritual support,” Koren said in a press release. “Little did I understand the magnitude of the devastation and the resources needed to help those involved. I am here to assist this community with the same dedication and fervor I would show our own community.”

In response to the record-setting flash flooding in the St. Louis region, The Salvation Army will set up five multi-agency resource centers throughout the metro area to offer food, water, financial support based on need, case management, clean-up kits and emotional and spiritual care.
