New endurance-style race set for Sept. 4 at Bob Mays Park to raise money for St. Jude

St. Jude

QUINCY — A new kind of running event is coming to Quincy.

The St. Jude Runs – Kilometers for Kids event is an endurance-style run set for 6:30-10:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at Bob Mays Park. Runners can choose to run a solo 10 x 5K, a 2-person relay 10 x 5K, or a traditional 5K. The 10 x 5K events begin at 7 a.m., with the 5K at 10 a.m. Registration is open until 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3.

“This event was started because there is no endurance style event in the Quincy area,” race director Brad Kendrick said in a press release. “We hope that this event will grow to include runners from all over the area.”

The 10 x 5K events will take place during a 10-hour period. Each runner will need to be in the designated starting corral at the top of each hour for 10 consecutive hours. The 2-person relay teams choose their own order for runners and share a bib for the whole day. All 10 loops must be completed to be eligible for awards. A traditional 5K is included for runners who prefer a short-distance race.

“This is the best of both worlds,” Kendrick said. “There will be crazy fast runners and crazy ultra-
runners on the same course.”

A runner rehab area will be set up with water, Tailwind and various snacks. Runners can set up tents and hang out while waiting for their next loop to begin.

All proceeds will be donated to the St. Jude Quincy to Peoria Run, which benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The St. Jude Run takes place each summer. The 2022 event raised $125,000 for St. Jude. Next year’s event is scheduled for Aug. 4-5, 2023. A table will be set up in the park where donations will be accepted and St. Jude Run t-shirts will be for sale.
