QUINCY — The Quincy Medical Group Foundation is accepting applications for its third annual Dr. Michael Ouwenga Scholarship. Two awards of $5,000 will be granted to qualifying students.

The scholarship was created to honor Ouwenga, a urologist and board member at QMG before he died in January 2019 at age 43.

In a press release, QMG urologist Dr. Daniel Schneider, who worked alongside Ouwenga, said, “Dr. Ouwenga was a wonderful physician and gave everything for the health and betterment of the community. This scholarship is a fitting legacy to such a wonderful person and selfless man.”

QMG chief medical officer Dr. Richard Noble said, “One of the initial recipients of the scholarship award recently returned for the holidays and spent time shadowing with two of Dr. Ouwenga’s physician colleagues. I truly believe that Michael would be extremely proud of the positive impact that this award has already provided to the future generation of healthcare providers.”

Applicants must be a high school senior from Quincy (Quincy High School, Quincy Notre Dame or a homeschooled student) with a minimum 3.5 GPA, involved in the community and extracurricular activities and planning to attend a two or four-year school in a healthcare-related field.

An application must be submitted or postmarked no later than March 20 for consideration by the scholarship committee. Applicants will be notified of decisions in April. To download the application or complete it online, go to quincymedgroup.com/foundation/ouwenga-scholarship/.
