To commemorate its Diamond Jubilee, Cornerstone announces campaign goal of $75,000

QUINCY — The Family Service Agency opened its doors on Oct. 1, 1947 in the Western Catholic Union building to provide counseling to individuals and families in Quincy and Adams County.

The Family Service Agency, now known as Cornerstone: Foundations for Families, is still providing the skills, support and hope to individuals and families in Quincy and the surrounding areas 75 years later.

To commemorate its Diamond Jubilee celebration, Cornerstone has set an annual campaign goal of $75,000. The funds from the campaign will go toward:

• Providing the skills, support and hope needed for fulfilling, effective lives to at-risk clients.
• School-age children with social, emotional and/or behavioral problems.
• New and expectant mothers at risk for child neglect.
• Families with adoptive children.
• Providing affordable access to therapeutic services for people of all ages.
• Continuing the tradition Cornerstone is known for in the community.

Thanks to a group of concerned citizens, Quincy was on the forefront when it came to mental health. A survey conducted in 1944 discovered a need for a general, non-sectarian agency to care for the varied child and family needs in Quincy and the surrounding area. By acknowledging the need for therapeutic services in the community, the original 19-member Family Service Agency board members began to break the stigma surrounding mental health long before it became a national topic. 

Many changes have happened at Cornerstone during the past 75 years — social and economic developments, new office spaces, even a name change — but its dedication to Quincy never has wavered.
