The Altrusa International of Quincy, Illinois Foundation was founded in 1998 with a bequest from Patricia and Leonard Kramer. Patricia had been a member of Altrusa of Quincy, which is part of an international organization that focuses primarily on literacy. The Kramers had no children but understood the importance of literacy. The foundation established a scholarship in their honor.
Applicants are judged on a number of factors including grades and school and community involvement. These factors are included in an essay written by the student.
Since the first scholarship was awarded in 1998, more than $65,000 has been donated.
All Adams County high school students are eligible to apply for the traditional scholarships. Area colleges and trade schools are notified of the non-traditional applications. The next application process will begin January 2026 when information will be forwarded to high school counselors and college financial aid offices.
