C-SC history professor to speak at History Happy Hour on Thursday at Lincoln-Douglas Debate Museum

QUINCY — Culver-Stockton College professor of history Scott Giltner will present “Toney: One Man’s Long Journey Through American Slavery” on Thursday, May 15, as part of the History Happy Hour program series at the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Museum (LDDM), 128 N. Fifth.
Doors open at 5 p.m. with a mini reception including light refreshments. The presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a question-and-answer session and conversation to follow.
Toney spent the first 55 years of his life unfree. Enslaved by noted educator and minister James Shannon, Toney lived with the Shannons in Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky and Missouri between the late 1820s and his emancipation in 1861. Looking at his life in those four distinct slavery contexts allows Toney’s story to be used not just as an accompaniment to that of his so-called master but more importantly to better understand how antebellum slavery evolved over time and in different places.
The public is welcome, and there is no cost to attend. Donations to the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Museum will be accepted on site.
