Jammers turn 180 pounds of strawberries into 500 jars of jam for 149th Strawberry Festival on Saturday
QUINCY — In preparation for the 149th annual Strawberry Festival at Melrose Chapel United Methodist Church in Quincy, a volunteer group of nine “jammers” recently turned 180 pounds of strawberries into 500 jars of tasty strawberry jam. The jam will be for sale at the festival at the church, 3600 Payson Road, from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, June 1.
The jam making process included the actual preparing the strawberries, heating the jam mixture, pouring the jam into pint jars and sealing them with special lids.
In a press release, one of the “jammers” said, “It was work, taking several hours, but it was pleasant work. Anytime you can get together with friends and your church family for a good cause, it is good time. Many of us will return in two weeks to stem the strawberries for the festival.”
The Strawberry Festival serves a sandwich menu and features several types of strawberry desserts.
