Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program to continue through August in west-central Illinois

QUINCY — Two Rivers Regional Council of Public Officials reminds people needing assistance with their home energy costs that help is available through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

The program provides one-time benefits to income-eligible households to help with energy bills and for reconnection of energy service. The program year began in October 2023 and continues until Aug. 15.

Anyone who has not received assistance since October 2023 is eligible to apply for assistance. People need to make an appointment in the county they live in. Anyone who has received assistance through LIHEAP since October 2023 is not eligible to apply for additional assistance unless they become disconnected, have a disconnect notice or are below 25 percent in their propane tank.

Households must be at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level to receive a benefit from LIHEAP. The 30-day income guidelines for LIHEAP are based on federal poverty guidelines, state median income and the number of people living in the household. The income guidelines are as follows:

  • 1 person – $2,430
  • 2 person – $3,287
  • 3 person – $4,143
  • 4 person – $5,000

To submit an application, you must submit all documentation required:

  • Proof of gross income from all household members for the pervious 30-day period beginning with the date of application.
  • Proof of Social Security numbers or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for all household members.
  • A copy of current heat and electric bills issued within the last 60 days.
