QUINCY — The Quincy Astronomy Club will be presenting an in-person lecture by Mike Nobis at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, at John Wood Community College in room D022/D023 on the lower north-end of Building D in the rear. The public is invited.

The presentation will focus on constellations and how to identify them. Nobis will discuss the constellations throughout history, how we use them today, why they are important and all the fun a family can have learning the night sky.

This will be an ideal lecture for people who are new to astronomy and want to learn more.

In a press release, Nobis said, “Today, recognizing and understanding constellations is a lost skill. 100 years ago, everyone knew the constellations because most of our lives revolved around them and their usage. Today, one can hardly see the stars due to light pollution, and those who can see them don’t spend time outside.”

Nobis, a retired Quincy businessman, is dedicated to teaching kids the importance of getting outside and spending time looking up and noticing the knowledge found in the sky. Nobis is a volunteer with the Gardner Camp Junior Astronomy Club.
