QUINCY — Aly Young, a student at Quincy Notre Dame High School, has been named the Quincy Service Club’s Leonard Biallas Youth of the Year award and will receive a $2,500 scholarship.

The club, in conjunction with principals and counselors from Quincy Notre Dame and Quincy High School, annually selects six students for the “Youth of the Month” award — three from QHS and three from QND.

Named for Biallas, a former professor at Quincy University and a long-time member of the Quincy Service Club, this award honors students for academic achievement, school and community activities, community service and a written essay on the impact of volunteerism in the student’s life, community and future plans. Biallas was a member of the youth committee for many years and scored the essays before he died in 2022.

Other students who competed for this year’s honor from Quincy High School are Brianna Lannerd, daughter of Amy Lannerd; Leah Chevalier, daughter of Kristie and Danion Chevalier; and Falaq Khan, daughter of Reshma Azeez. Quincy Notre Dame honorees were Denver Bryan, son of Heather Bryan; and John “Jack” Myers, son of Rob and Karen Myers.

Young, a daughter of Mike and Mandy Young, was chosen for academics, activities and achievements and her essay telling the story of how a volunteer changed her life and how she will continue to pay it forward in her role on the Service Core at Catholic Family Fest Land this summer.

Young will be recognized at the regular meeting of the Quincy Service Club at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, April 12, at the Elks Lodge.

The Quincy Service Club is an all-volunteer service organization whose members serve the Quincy community. Among the many projects sponsored by QSC are the Flags of Honor, Child Abuse Prevention, Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championship, the Leonard Biallas Youth of the Year and the Bud Willer Scholarship honoring a senior who has overcome obstacles en route to graduation.
