QUINCY — Dr. Lawrence Volz has joined the department of surgery. at Blessing Health. An Air Force veteran, Volz received his medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Neb., and completed residency at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. Volz is skilled in robotic surgery.
In a press release, Volz said, “I was a very early adopter of this amazing technology. The robot allows me to perform complicated intra-abdominal surgery through small incisions allowing for rapid discharge from the hospital with minimal pain, quick recovery and return to normal activity.”
Volz was an active duty surgeon during his Air Force service and retired with the rank of major.
“When the opportunity to attend medical school on an Air Force Scholarship arose for me, it was a great opportunity to serve my country and earn my medical degree at the same time,” he said. “Being a veteran has allowed me to understand and connect with fellow veterans. Many veterans find peace in knowing I served as well.”
Dr. John Leiner has joined Blessing Health in the department of internal medicine. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed his residency at Indiana University Health Center. Leiner’s special interests include preventive cardiovascular medicine and diabetes and metabolic health.
After spending the early part of his career treating patients and teaching medical students in Virginia and Indianapolis, Leiner has come home.
“I spent my summers on the family farm in Winchester,” he said. “My brother and I still operate the farm. We have a solar project going and are working on a greenhouse for vegetables. It is exciting to be back.”
When not treating patients or on the farm, Leiner reads about history and international affairs, a topic on which this lifelong learner holds an undergraduate degree.
“Those topics offer the opportunity to learn from different cultures and historical perspectives,” Leiner said.
