Department of Natural Resources to hold public session June 30 on Lewis County landfill expansion

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will hold a public awareness session on the permitting process for a proposed expansion at the Backridge Landfill in Lewis County at 5 p.m. Monday, June 30, at La Grange City Hall, 118 S. Main, in La Grange.
Representatives from the department’s Waste Management Program, Missouri Geological Survey and Northeast Regional Office will be present, along with representatives from BFI Waste Systems of Missouri, LLC, to answer questions during the informal discussion period.
The proposed site is at 26265 State Highway B in LaGrange, northeast of the U.S. Highway 61 and State Road B intersection. The department has approved BFI Waste Systems for a preliminary site investigation, the first step in the landfill construction permitting process.
The department reviews all permit applications to ensure sanitary landfills are properly designed and constructed, including examining key technical factors that protect Missouri’s public health and environment. During this public awareness session, the department will explain its application review process and the approximate timeline for ruling on the application.
People requiring special services or accommodations to attend the meeting should contact Cody Shelton with Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Waste Management Program, P.O. Box 176, Jefferson City, Mo., 65102-0176, or call 573-751-5401 or 800-361-4827, two weeks before the meeting.
